How can you take something ordinary, something you pass by every day without noticing, and make it mysterious or intriguing? Through composition! The challenge of our composition unit aims to teach students just that. How can you transform the world around you (and help others to see the world with fresh eyes) through composition? Students are challenged to take every day objects and environments and transform them into new, intriguing, or unrecognizable mysteries through unique angles, distances, and composition techniques.
Students take what they learned from our abstract unit and make original games. Past students have created everything from board games and apps to multi-level platform video games. The sky is the limit, as long as it incorporates elements of abstract photography!
Students experiment with shutter speed to create "light paintings," long exposure images where trails of light are captured over several seconds. To create these images, we blacked out the classroom and used color changing light wands.
